The Gunnison River Whitewater Park
The Gunnison Valley is a favorite destination for outdoor lovers and adventure seekers both local and from afar. A favorite summer destination for locals, the Gunnison River Whitewater Park is located just a mile or so from downtown Gunnison, Colorado, off of Highway 50 where it meets County Road 38. The Gunnison River Whitewater Park is easy to get to either by car, bike or even on foot and access is free. Open from sunrise to 10:00 pm, there is plenty of parking located at the entrance, or you can float there from other up-river locations.
Built for canoeing, kayaking and rafting, it's not uncommon to also see people surfing the waves created by the strategically placed rocks and boulders. Later in the summer months, when the water levels are lower, the Gunnison River Whitewater Park is also a great spot for the family to go tubing. Keep in mind, kids under the age of 13 must wear a life jacket.
Not so much into water sports? That's alright, The Gunnison River Whitewater Park is a great place to just hang out for the day. There is a picnic area with grills so bring a cooler, pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the scenery. A trail runs along the shores allowing for easy access to fishing or just to take a stroll along the banks and take in the wildflowers and native plants. There are usually brochures with information on the trees and plant life at the start of the trail. Click here for more information on The Gunnison River Whitewater Park.
