Crested Butte Trails: Whetstone Vista To Upper Loop
Summer is finally here and after a big winter, we're all anxious to hit the hiking trails. It's that time of year when we all like to take in the mountain and valley views, fresh mountain air, budding trees and summer wildflowers. If you're headed to the north end of the valley, be sure to check out one of our favorite, the Whetstone Vista to Upper Loop. With expansive views of Whetstone Mountain and the southern valley, this is a perfect day hike or family outing. While the trail is relatively short at only 2.7 miles round trip, it would be considered a moderate hike with an elevation gain of 436 feet. You will want to give yourself 1.5 - 2 hours to complete your hike.
The Whetstone Vista to Upper Loop is a great hike for early spring or later into the fall as it tends to stay drier than some of the tails at higher elevations and with it's southern exposure gets more sunshine. This is also a great trail for those seeking summer wildflowers. Parts of the Upper Loop are thick with Alpine Sunflowers and Lupine just to name a few.
The trailhead is located approximately a mile up Brush Creek Rd (CR 738) on the left hand side. You will find parking located on the right hand side of the road across from the trailhead. From there you will start up the trail into a dense aspen grove which is just stunning during the fall when the aspens are changing colors. Along the trail you may run into an occasional mountain biker or other hikers. Keep in mind that the trail does run along some private property in places to please be respectful and enjoy your beautiful hike.
